This sculpture honors the Afro-Colombian culture. The Palenqueras, invisible and undeniable heroines, are the pleasant and moving image of Cartagena de Indias, in its bastions and horizons near the sea.
They represent descendants of the first African women who, in the nights of antiquity, fled from the cruelty of the Spanish conquistadors and took refuge in the thickets of the marshes and mountains.
Black women were forced to cover their hair to 'not become attractive to their masters and therefore started wearing turbans; but what was once shame is now colorful fabrics that fill them with pride.
For them, having a turban is not just a fashion statement; it carries a very powerful meaning.
Due to their handmade nature, each individual piece will be unique.
