Tintorero Celeste Hammock
Tintorero Celeste Hammock
The hammocks from Tintorero, Lara, are entirely handmade, from the suspension ropes, all the way to the beautiful fringes on the sides.
Tintorero, a small town near Barquisimeto (declared a Cultural Heritage of Venezuela), is renowned for its craft sales, especially the weaving that originated from the indigenous people who used cotton to weave hammocks and hammock chairs.
Many years ago, the hanging hammocks were woven with sheep's wool; today, that has changed, and artisans work with cotton thread or twine.
Tintorero owes its name to the word “tinta”, meaning dye in Spanish. The variety of dye colors used by the artisans to color the threads and fabrics that they create, make this name an excellent fit.
There used to be 600 looms; currently, only 30 remain. Almost all the residents of Tintorero have their house-workshops where they craft & sell their creations.
Due to their handmade nature, each individual piece will be unique.
